Tie colour chart: which tie for which suit

The short version of what the finder knows. A good tie contrasts with the suit, stands clearly apart from the shirt, usually by being darker, and suits the occasion. Texture, such as grenadine or shantung, lets a tie sit close to the suit’s own colour without disappearing.

Charcoal suit

BestNavy, burgundy, mid blue, green, purple

Also goodSilver, red, teal

AvoidBlack, mid grey

Sober and cool. Navy is the default and very hard to beat; deep burgundy, purple and green add warmth. A grey tie disappears into the suit.

Grey suit

BestNavy, burgundy, purple, green, mid blue

Also goodBrown, red, teal, gold, pink, pale blue

AvoidBlack; grey and silver sit too close

The friendliest ground for a tie. Purple sits on mid grey better than on any other suit, and brown is how they wear it in Naples.

Light grey suit

BestNavy, mid blue, green, burgundy, brown

Also goodPurple, teal, gold, pale blue, pink

AvoidBlack; pale grey and silver

Warm-weather cloth. It carries lighter, brighter ties than charcoal can, but still wants a darker tie to give the outfit a centre.

Blue suit (bright or royal blue)

BestNavy, burgundy, brown, grey

Also goodSilver, green, gold

AvoidA mid blue tie, black

A bright blue suit has already made its statement. Calm it at the neck with something deeper; brown on bright blue makes the suit look expensive.

Black suit

BestSilver, grey

Also goodBurgundy, navy, purple; black silk after dark

AvoidBrown, rust and orange

In Italy the black suit belongs to evenings and ceremonies. Keep the tie cool and quiet. Silver echoes evening wear without looking like a costume.

Brown suit

BestGreen, navy, gold, burgundy

Also goodRust, teal, pale blue, mid blue

AvoidBlack, grey, silver

Brown lives on the warm side of the wheel. Green on brown is the most natural pairing in the wardrobe, and navy is the cool note that keeps it sharp.

Beige, stone or tan suit

BestNavy, brown, green, burgundy, mid blue

Also goodGold, teal, rust, red

AvoidBlack, silver

Summer cloth, often linen. Navy on stone is crisp and summery, the linen-suit uniform of the Amalfi coast.

Olive or green suit

BestBurgundy, brown, navy

Also goodGold, rust, purple

AvoidBlack, silver; green only in a very different shade

Earthy and muted. Pair it with warm, deep colours such as burgundy, brown or rust, or with navy for contrast.

Tuxedo or dinner jacket

BestA black silk bow tie, ideally self-tied

Also goodA midnight navy bow tie

AvoidA long black tie, coloured bow ties

A dinner jacket has one correct partner. A long black tie with it looks like a waiter’s uniform.

Which tie colour for which shirt

The shirt decides how much contrast the tie needs. The rule that never fails: the tie should be clearly darker than the shirt.

White shirt

The most freedom. Almost any dark or mid colour reads clearly against white: navy, burgundy, grey, green, purple. Only white, cream and very pale silver ties disappear.

Light blue shirt

The Italian default. Navy, burgundy, brown and gold all work. Avoid a tie in a similar pale blue: go much darker, or move to the warm side.

Pink shirt

Navy is the standing answer, with grey and deep green close behind. Avoid pink and bright red ties, which blur into the shirt.

Lilac shirt

Navy, grey and deep burgundy steady it. Avoid purples and pinks in a similar shade.

Cream or ecru shirt

Warm, earthy ties: brown, green and burgundy. White, silver and pale gold wash into the collar.

Black or dark shirt

The tie has to be lighter than the shirt: silver, pale blue or grey. An Italian tailor would rather skip the tie and open the collar.

Striped shirt

A plain tie, or dots, paisley or a medallion set larger than the stripe. Never stripes on stripes of a similar width.

Checked shirt

A plain tie, or an organic pattern such as paisley, floral or dots, clearly larger than the check. No checks or grids.

Questions about ties

What colour tie goes with a navy suit?

Burgundy is the cornerstone, followed by grey, brown and deep green. A navy tie on a navy suit is very Italian, provided the tie has texture, such as a grenadine or shantung, so it stays distinct from the cloth. Avoid black.

What colour tie goes with a charcoal suit?

Navy is the default and very hard to beat. Deep burgundy, purple and green add warmth. Avoid black, which reads as a uniform or a funeral, and mid grey, which disappears into the suit.

What colour tie goes with a grey suit?

Navy first, then burgundy, purple, green and mid blue. Purple sits on mid grey better than on any other suit colour, and a textured brown tie is the Neapolitan choice. Avoid grey or silver ties, which flatten the outfit, and black.

What colour tie goes with a black suit?

Silver or grey. They echo evening wear and keep the look cool and quiet. Deep burgundy, navy and purple also work. A black tie is correct only after dark or at a funeral, and brown or orange ties fight a black suit.

What colour tie goes with a blue suit?

With a bright or royal blue suit, wear navy, burgundy, brown or grey. They calm the blue rather than compete with it. Avoid a mid blue tie, which turns the outfit into a matching set, and black.

What colour tie goes with a brown suit?

Green is the most natural partner, followed by navy, gold and burgundy. Brown suits want the warm side of the colour wheel, with navy as the cool contrast. Never black, and avoid grey, which looks muddy.

What colour tie goes with a light blue shirt?

Navy, burgundy, brown or gold. Light blue is the Italian default shirt, and the only trap is a tie in a similar pale blue. Go much darker, or move to the warm side.

What colour tie goes with a pink shirt?

Navy is the standing answer, with grey and deep green close behind. Pink is soft and warm, so it wants a darker, cooler tie. Avoid pink and bright red ties.

Should the tie be darker than the shirt?

Almost always. The tie has to stand clearly apart from the shirt, and the most reliable way to do that is to make it darker. A pale tie on a pale shirt disappears at conversational distance. The traditional exception is a silver tie on a white shirt at a daytime wedding.

Should the tie be lighter or darker than the suit?

Either works, as long as it contrasts. On navy, charcoal and black suits most good ties are a little lighter or brighter than the cloth; on light grey, stone and tan suits a darker tie anchors the outfit. What fails is a tie in the same tone as the suit, unless its texture sets it apart.

Can I wear a black tie with a navy or grey suit?

For business or an interview, no. In Italy a black tie belongs to mourning and to evening wear, so with a daytime suit it looks severe. Navy, burgundy or grey does the same job better. At an evening event, a black silk tie with a dark suit is correct.

What is the most versatile tie colour?

Navy. It works with navy, charcoal, grey, blue, brown and stone suits, with white, light blue and pink shirts, and from the office to a wedding. If you own only one tie, make it a navy grenadine. Burgundy is a close second.

What colour tie should I wear to a job interview?

Navy or burgundy, plain or finely patterned. Navy reads as trustworthy and calm, and burgundy as confident without being loud. Avoid black, which looks severe, and anything bright or novel. The tie should earn trust and then disappear.

What colour tie should a wedding guest wear?

A wedding is the day for lighter colours: silver, pale blue, pink and lilac, or a floral or paisley pattern. Silver with a grey suit is the classic. Don’t upstage the groom, and leave black for funerals.

How do I wear a patterned tie with a patterned shirt?

Change the kind of pattern and the scale. Never wear stripes on stripes of a similar width. With a striped shirt, choose a plain tie or one with dots, paisley or a medallion. With a checked shirt, choose a plain tie or an organic pattern that is clearly larger than the check.

How long and how wide should a tie be?

The tip should just touch the top of your belt buckle. The blade should roughly match your jacket lapel at its widest point. Around 8 cm suits most jackets. Tie it in a four-in-hand with a single dimple.

What is a grenadine tie, and why is it so versatile?

Grenadine, or garza, is silk woven on a leno loom in Como. The open weave gives it a texture that is formal enough for the boardroom and relaxed enough for the weekend, and it works in every season. If you own only one tie, make it a navy grenadine.

What tie should I wear with a tuxedo?

A black silk bow tie, self-tied if possible. Midnight navy is the only traditional alternative. A long tie with a dinner jacket is a fashion choice, not black tie.
